São Paulo FC Basquete has ended its activities due to a lack of investment. The decision has shocked the fans and the national basketball community. The reason behind the closure is similar in both cases: lack of monetary investment. In an interview with Estadão, former Corinthians player and current ESPN commentator Gustavinho Lima lamented the new situation of the club and spoke about the impacts that the team's freezes have on the category. "As everyone says, no matter the sport you follow, there will always be a Corinthians fan there to support you. And more than that, Corinthians has always been seen as a formative club, saying they are proud of the 'boys formed on the terrão' and launching good players. It's very sad that the modality is in this situation", declared the former athlete. The announcement of the pause of the professional teams and the base was released first by the Café Belgrado podcast in September of this year. In the midst of difficulties in dealing with the crises and debts of the football team, the management of Osmar Stabile decided to freeze the activities of the basketball team justifying that the "financial operation to maintain the teams does not pay". The same should apply to futsal, but almost a month after the statements of the board, the club decided to go back and keep the teams in the next season. "Basketball will go until a period next year and we will look for sponsorships and partners so that we do not interrupt the sport. The idea is to look for sponsorship and money", informed Stabile at the Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu during the launch event of the Copinha 2026. Currently, the male team occupies the first part of the table of the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) championship, classifying among the top seven, while the female team is competing in the final of the Campeonato Paulista. "I would like and believe that the sport should be seen as a priority, that we have more public investment policies to promote it. Sport is a tool for social transformation and that is its main function. That is the point that shocks the most, because Corinthians is giving up on the development of so many young people, mainly in the base categories", completed Gustavinho. Until now, athletes and technical staff have not commented on the freeze of the modality in the next year and the functioning of the base continues uncertain for the next season.
